“That’s weird. I don’t even remember it the same now.” This is something one of my patients said as we completed the Accelerated Resolution Therapy processing of his childhood memory of painful trauma. Eliminating his emotional reaction to the memories that previously haunted him.
Traumatic memories are stored in a primal part of the brain, where, when something related to the trauma occurs, trigger high emotional arousal because the neurons are hard wired to stimulate this part of the brain automatically. All those feelings of helplessness, shame, self-loathing and fear are activated in an instant, activating the fear – and fight, flight, freeze response. These memories can also be reexperienced in intense flashbacks and can be haunting and apparently inescapable to many.
We all want to feel peace and connection, but living with childhood trauma can affect your life, your self-esteem and your relationships in so many destructive ways. Even when trying our hardest, we can find ourselves stuck in the past, constantly worried about the future, or reliving traumatic events we wish would just go away. The good news is, there are new innovative treatments that even the Veterans’ Administration condone for war ravaged veterans. And I can offer this brief effective treatment for relief from this stress and pain.
By using the cutting-edge eye-movement therapy called Accelerated Resolution Therapy, we can quickly process childhood trauma and anxiety in just a few sessions. Using eye movements, like reenacting the rapid eye movements (REM’s) of the dream state, you recall the trauma without having to talk about it, and the eye movements can be used to calm reactive symptoms during the process. Like EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing), eye movements are used to help you process disturbing past memories, but Accelerated Resolution Therapy helps you to more quickly change the effects of these memories. During the relaxing of the eye movements your mind stays grounded in the present, and the process is soothing so that your anxiety is quickly relieved. The next time, you would be guided to create new images that create pleasant feelings, and although you remember what happened, the created memory has built new neural pathways and connections, and held together, they alleviate the distress and the triggering is eliminated. As the problem trauma loses its hold on the neural pathways of your mind, you will feel relief.
Using these simple and calming eye movements to create new healthy pathways in the brain, you can stop overreacting to stress or ruminating on the past.
If you suffer from childhood trauma, you can now live with a renewed sense of peace and joy. Research indicates that this process is creating lasting change and freeing people from past trauma.
You may not believe that healing your anxiety or PTSD without months of therapy could be possible, but this evidence-based treatment could relieve the hold your past trauma has had on you until now.
